Workplace Relationships: Interpersonal Skills for Relating to People when Working in Groups and Teams

Developing self-understanding about your personal styles, preferences and talents

The vast majority of jobs within organisations require us to be able to interact with other people: colleagues, customers and the public. Many of our interpersonal skills are developed in our childhood and through our education and upbringing, but these skills, whilst very important, do not always prepare us and provide us with the skills for the more professional working interactions that are an essential feature of the workplace.

We certainly do learn from experience, especially when we find ourselves members of groups and teams ' but are we sure that we are maximising from the potential of our interactions?

Do we know and understand our personal styles and how these can both inspire some as well as de-motivate others? What impact do we have on those around us? What impact should we have?

Are we familiar with the working dynamics of a group and team and how, by recognising the various stages of a team's and group's development through its life cycle, we can help the team to progress and exploit its potential to be greater than the sum of individual contributions? A successful team is not just about its leader - it requires engaging and enabling team members.

This course provides an essential step in the development of understanding of ourselves, our preferences and styles, enabling us to engage and develop our emotional intelligence so that we apply a more situational approach to our interactions with people ' with potential for amazing results.
