Specifications are the foundations of the procurement cycle, a poorly written or structured specification will be a major reason why companies fail to receive Goods and Services that the ultimate customer desired or thought they were going to get.

In today’s business environment where businesses are outsourcing large parts of their activities, the role of the specification is becoming increasingly important. Goods and Services provided by external companies are now complex and have become a key area that requires particular attention. Poor specifications will lead to dissatisfied customers and the goods or service will not meet the business need.

This intensive course is essential and suitable for both technical and commercial personnel and for anyone seeking to improve their performance and understanding in what is now seen as a key role requiring a professional approach.
This course is designed for experienced staff as well as comparative newcomers. Procurement staff, contracts analysts, engineers, end-users in line departments, design staff are all likely to benefit from attending.

They will learn the legal importance of the specification and how it interfaces with the Enquiry Document (Invitation To Tender Document).
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
  • Understand the role of the specification in the procurement cycle
  • Appreciate the legal importance of the Specification and the Enquiry Document
  • See how different types of specification impact on the potential bidders
  • Understand the role of the technical offer in tender evaluation
  • Use international/company standards where applicable
  • Identify a poorly written specification
  • Identify a poorly structured specification
  • Identify the differences between functional, performance and detailed specifications and the inherent risks with each.
  • See how language and punctuation can change the meaning of clause.
  • Write specifications to meet business needs in their own country environment.
Participants will be expected to bring with them to the course examples of current specifications which would be worked on and developed during the programme.
